Audio Matters

Videoconferencing is a HOT topic right now- and it’s being used more and more in our day-to-day business activities with more remote workers, business travel, and remote office communication. Let’s face it- videoconferencing makes it easier to connect and read each other in a convenient way. Technology (if used correctly and installed easily) can make our lives much easier, however when it doesn’t work the way we want it to, that can be a real problem because it can cause more frustration than it’s worth.

In this scenario, we think about the potential problems that arise: maybe an unstable internet connection, causing audio to break up or video to become blurry. In that case, we realize that without AUDIO, the meeting can’t move forward effectively, BUT if we can understand the content being communicated to us, we can at least move forward and accomplish the meeting objectives. Audio provides the content and meaning; video provides the context. Therefore, the video connection becomes secondary in importance to the audio.

In cases like this we start to wonder, why is the emphasis typically placed on video? Is it because as human beings, sight is our foremost sense, and we seek the visual communication to help us understand more about the context what we gather from the content? Regardless, it forces us to consider the utmost importance of audio in this era driven by videoconferencing and remote communication. Wouldn’t we care MOST about audio if that is the most reliable way we can clearly understand each other? Do YOU traditionally think of audio as being secondary to video or vice-versa?

Ideally, we want the two to work hand in hand so that we get the BEST possible conferencing experience. We’re not saying to dump your existing videoconferencing solutions, in fact we encourage you to embrace this technology and allow us as the audio experts to help you make the MOST of your meeting experience. We’re just asking you to consider any potential AUDIO issues FIRST to ensure that you are making the most of your meetings. If participants can be understood clearly and effectively, the meeting can go on, but we don’t consider it completely successful if all the pieces and parts don’t come together both effectively and efficiently.
